Beaver Believers
Caroline welcomes Ben Goldfarb, environmental journalist, author, editor, and a “Beaver Believer” – a growing coalition of scientists, ranchers, and other allies who”recognize that ecosystems with beavers are far healthier than those without them.”
Ben Goldfarb is the author of Eager: The Surprising, Secret Life of Beavers and Why They Matter, winner of the 2019 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award and named one of the best books of 2018 by The Washington Post.
His writing has appeared in The Atlantic, Science, The Washington Post, National Geographic, The New York Times, Orion Magazine, Mother Jones, The Guardian and many other publications. His fiction has appeared in publications including Motherboard, Moss, Bellevue Literary Review, The Allegheny Review, and The Hopper, which nominated him for a Pushcart Prize in 2017. Goldfarb holds a Masters of Environmental Management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He is currently working on his next book (about road ecology) while living in Colorado with his wife, Elise, and his dog, Kit — which is, of course, what you call a baby beaver.

Akaya Windwood facilitates transformation. She advises, trains, and consults on how change happens individually, organizationally, and societally. She is on faculty for the Just Economy Institute, and is founder of the New Universal, which centers human wisdom in the wisdom of brown womxn. She was President of Rockwood Leadership Institute for many years, and directs the Thriving Roots Fund, which supports young womxn’s finance and philanthropic learning and leadership based in generosity and interconnectedness.

Bill McKibben is a founder of Third Act, which organizes people over the age of 60 to work on climate and racial justice. He founded the first global grassroots climate campaign, 350.org, and serves as the Schumann Distinguished Professor in Residence at Middlebury College in Vermont. In 2014 he was awarded the Right Livelihood Prize, sometimes called the ‘alternative Nobel,’ in the Swedish Parliament. He’s also won the Gandhi Peace Award, and honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He has written over a dozen books about the environment, including his first, The End of Nature, published in 1989, and the forthcoming The Flag, the Cross, and the Station Wagon: A Graying American Looks Back at his Suburban Boyhood and Wonders What the Hell Happened.

Liberating Cultural Highjinx:Vamos, a graduate of Reed College, “presented the Reed College Commencement Speech on May 19, 2014, where he announced that the college had decided to divest from fossil fuels,[7] a decision the college had in fact not made.”
Igor Vamos is a culture artist, known as “Mike Bonanno” in his work with the performance-activism duo The Yes Men. They are known for “infiltrating conferences, producing fake spectacles, disrupting events, destroying brands, and otherwise exposing wrongdoing…” And are dedicated to “us[ing] any means necessary to agree our way into the fortified compounds of commerce, ask questions, and smuggle out the stories of our undercover escapades to provide a public glimpse at the behind-the-scenes world of business.”
